172 - The Middle

2011

Saturday afternoon ...

ZYFAN:

Mez, are you alright?

MEZ:

I just caught Jesse cheating on Io. Whenever he screws up,
I end up in the middle of it.

ZYFAN:

I do not see how.

MEZ:

I share a room with him and Io. Am I supposed to act like nothing's happened?

ZYFAN:

I see how that could be uncomfortable for you.

MEZ:

And who does Jesse cheat with? My girlfriend’s sister.

I can't keep this from Cammeo. Man, I just knew he’d do something like this, and you know what? It's just the beginning …

ZYFAN:

It is?

MEZ:

Uh-huh, ‘cause whenever he gets caught - he goes

out drinking. Then he's even more obnoxious than usual.

ZYFAN:

Yes, you are right. I remember how it was when the three

of us were room mates, before Io arrived. Perhaps I can help? I will keep an eye on Jesse, so he cannot go out drinking.

MEZ:

Do you think you can?

ZYFAN:

Of course. In the meantime, you must have Herita tell Cammeo.

Bring the two of them together so they may speak.

MEZ:

Good idea.

... What about Io?

ZYFAN:

That is more difficult, but I do not think you should tell him.

I will speak to Jesse and see what he plans to do.

MEZ:

Thanks  Zyfan.

A little while later ...

MEZ:

Are you going to mention this afternoon to Cammeo?

HERITA:

What for? It’s none of ‘er concern.

MEZ:

But I know about it and I don't have secrets from her.

Either you tell her or I will.

HERITA:

Fine 'ave it your way. I'll tell 'er. Could be fun, seeing’ her face go all red.

In the living room ...

CAMMEO:

Herita and Mez, it’s so nice to see you two getting along.

HERITA:

Sorry to disappoint, but we ain't ...

CAMMEO:

Has something happened?

HERITA:

Your boy ‘as ‘is nickers in a knot

cause ‘e found me ‘n Jesse goin’ at it.

CAMMEO:

Going at it?

MEZ:

whispers on her ear

CAMMEO:

Oh my!

CAMMEO:

… I had no idea you fancied Jesse.

HERITA:

Who said anything about me fancyin' 'im? ‘e was there and

e ain't so bad, when he doesn’t speak - that is. So why not?

CAMMEO:

Herita, really.

HERITA:

What? ‘E’s a surprisingly good kisser.

CAMMEO:

Perhaps little self-control might’ve been in order.

HERITA:

Self control! Sis, I ‘aven’t even looked at a bloke in over 150 years.

Which is far and beyond self control - if ya ask me.

MEZ:

You don’t need me here. See ya later.

Mez leaves.

HERITA:

This is all ‘is fault ya know. That boy of yours got more

than ‘e bargained for when ‘e spotted Jesse 'n me.

HERITA:

... Ya ought to ‘ave seen ‘is face. ‘Ave ya noticed that ‘is eyes go

a deeper shade a blue when ‘e’s overwrought. It’s quite fetching.

CAMMEO:

I want you to stop calling him my boy. He’s not my boy.

HERITA:

‘E’s your boy, all right. ‘E lives for you.

CAMMEO:

I don't care. I think it's rude of you to …

Do you really think so?

HERITA:

I ‘ave eyes don’t I? You got 'im wrapped right

'round your li'l finger. It's a job well done sis.

CAMMEO:

You're beginning to warm up to him. I can tell.

HERITA:

‘E’ll never be good enough for ya, but I suppose

‘e’ll do. Tell me, is ‘e a good kisser?

CAMMEO:

blushing

Well yes, a very good kisser.

HERITA:

‘N ‘e’s good between the sheets?

CAMMEO:

I don’t ... I mean we haven’t actually ...

HERITA:

You’re pullin’ me leg? You mean you and ‘im ‘aven’t

… all this time? Amazing. Bloody amazing. Now there's self control.

CAMMEO:

We’ve done … things.

HERITA:
Right. Things.

CAMMEO:

Now you stop right there. I see what you've gone and done.

You're trying to get 'round me by changing the subject.

That’s all well and good but we're here to discuss you and Jesse.

HERITA:

There is no me 'n Jesse. Your boy, I mean Mez said ‘e didn’t want

any secrets 'tween you two - so ‘ere we are ‘aving this lovely li'l chat.

CAMMEO:

But … what about Io?

HERITA:

What about 'im?

CAMMEO:

You may have just broken the two of them up.

HERITA:

Ya mean - Jesse may ‘ave broken ‘em up. I just ‘happen to be there.

Io’s Jesse’s problem, or maybe it’s the other way 'round.

CAMMEO:

I suppose you're right. Poor Io. So, you’re really not interested in Jesse?

HERITA:

Not in a permanent sort of way. ‘E’ll do for a quick romp on the

odd occasion, but ya know me, I don’t care much for boys,

they're too much of a nuisance.

HERITA:

.. Now I’d better get going on me dinner.

As for you sis – I think ya best get on that boy of yours.
