Thursday morning …
SYRRAH:
There you are, husband. A word, please?
VANNI:
Certainly. I’m just finishing up breakfast with our little one. How's Zyfan?
SYRRAH:
I am hopeful he will recover.
VANNI:
Hopeful?
SYRRAH:
I can heal his body, but I do not yet know if his spirit has been effected
by the trauma. He woke briefly, but remembers nothing. As expected,
Karanthir will not leave his side. Tell me - is there any news?
VANNI:
Yes, and it's all good. Herita's home safe and sound, and still human.
SYRRAH:
That is good news. I am sure Cammeo is quite relieved that her twin
is not a newly-made vampire. It would have been awful if she
needed to end her existence, again.
VANNI:
Still, our Cammeo is no longer acting like the meek girl we all know and love.
Come sundown, she plans to interorgate vampires about this
morning's attack. She's preparing for battle as we speak.
SYRRAH:
The hunter in her has awoken.
VANNI:
Oh, and Jesse's home too.
SYRRAH:
Jesse? I was not aware he was missing.
VANNI:
He was with Herita last night. I sent him straight to Neve.
SYRRAH:
It is unfortunate that she was the one to find Zyfan.
VANNI:
Wife, you must be exhausted. You should go lie down.
SYRRAH:
I shall. I need to meditate so I can use my healing powers on
Zyfan again later, but I found I could not clear my mind.
VANNI:
Is there anything I can do?
SYRRAH:
Yes husband and that is why I am here ...
SYRRAH:
Explain why you did not inform me of this attack on my brother
before it happened.
VANNI:
Why would I have known?
SYRRAH:
Because you are a time traveler, a skill I know you use. Are you telling me, that in your travels, there was no mention of this?
VANNI:
That's right.
SYRRAH:
How is that possible? You travel often, do you not?
VANNI:
Well, yes. Mostly I visit you and my family.
SYRRAH:
So you go into the future, our future?
VANNI:
Of course I do but …
SYRRAH:
And you have never foreseen any dangers in the past?
VANNI:
Syrrah, your future self won't tell me anything.
SYRRAH:
But surely you speak to others, or read the histories …
VANNI:
You won't let me.
SYRRAH:
Am I to believe that I keep you locked in a cage when you visit?
VANNI:
Almost. This is how it works. You inform me when I can show up
and where. Then you arrange it so that it's only we two. You're
incredibly thorough at keeping our future a secret from me.
SYRRAH:
Apparently so.
VANNI:
You’ve told me that these precautions are necessary because you
know how you are - and wanted to protect me, from you.
SYRRAH:
I see.
VANNI:
If I had known Zyfan was in danger, I would've done all I could to prevent it. But he’s alive and well in the future, so there was no reason for me to think otherwise.
SYRRAH:
Have you spoken to Zyfan’s future self?
VANNI:
Yes, on the odd occasion. And before you ask, he's very guarded
– as instructed by you.
SYRRAH:
It seems I have thought of everything. I find that I am quite
frustrated with my future self. Yet, I admire her tenacity.
VANNI:
You wouldn't be my Syrrah otherwise.
SYRRAH:
After hearing your reasoning, I no longer have an ill feeling towards you.
VANNI:
Thank you.
SYRRAH:
And now I shall take our daughter, and we will nap together.
