170-Reading & Comprehension

Io, Jesse and Mez’s bedroom ...

JESSE:

... Oh man, did I miss this.

IO:

Jesse, the genie must tell you something ...

JESSE:

Uh-huh.

IO:

Please do not be mad - but the genie has been sleeping in your bed.

JESSE:

Io, you have an open invitation to hop in my bed anytime.

Later ...

IO:

Jesse ...

JESSE:

Mmm ...

IO:

Would you like the genie to read to you?

Miss Grace says Io must practice the words every day.

JESSE:

If she wanted you to read, why didn't she just wish it?

IO:

Her wishes can no longer be granted.

JESSE:

Really?

IO:

Yes. Miss Daprima is the power behind the first clan and she will not permit it. She said if Grace wanted the genie to read to her, then the genie would first need to be taught to read

and com-pre-hend on its own.

JESSE:

Right. So, Daprima's the power behind the clan - huh? Am I in this clan?

IO:

You are a part of it, but not a member of the first clan.

The genie can only grant wishes to Daprima and Mez.

JESSE:

Bummer. Man what I'd do with that power.

And Grace can't make wishes any more?

IO:

She can but they will not be granted, not until Miss Daprima
says it is OK. Would you like to hear Io read?

JESSE:

Sure, while we wait. Go for it.

IO:

Are we waiting for something, Jesse?

JESSE:
I’m waiting for more of Io, but in the meantime - go on, read me a story

- if it pleases you.

IO:

Thank you’ Jesse.

‘The day before Easter, Ducky's mom sent him out to hunt for eggs.'

JESSE:

Wait - what?

JESSE:

… Let me see that.

JESSE:

… Seriously?

IO:

Did Io read the words wrong?

JESSE:

No but - do me a favor, inside my bag's a book, a better book. Get it.

IO:

Is this the one?

JESSE:

Yeah. There's a page marked, just start there.

IO:

Jesse, there are no pictures in this book.

JESSE:

Pictures! What a great idea. If only there were pictures.

IO:

Io has never read a book without pictures. There are many words Jesse.

JESSE:

Don't worry, I'll help you. Start here ...

IO:

"Then his hand found its way down between my legs,

cupping what it found there. I hardened at his touch ..."

JESSE:

Why'd ya stop? You were doing great, got every word right.

IO:

Jesse, this is not like the books Grace gives Io to read.

JESSE:

I sure as hell hope not. This one's better, and it's educational.

IO:
It is?

JESSE:

Sure, it'll test how well you comprehend what you're reading. Isn't that what you're working on?

IO:

It is what Miss Grace said for the genie to do.

JESSE:

Well there ya go. We don’t want to go against Miss Grace's wishes. So keep going. It gets better, I promise.
