HERITA:
… I know you. You’re 'er boy. I been watching ya with her, I 'ave.
MEZ:
Who are you?
HERITA:
Go on and ask your sweetheart. She may even tell ya the truth.
Would be a nice change, wouldn't it?
MEZ:
What’s that supposed to mean?
HERITA:
You'll find 'er in the kitchen with the psychic.
Then ...
MEZ:
I just met the weirdest girl ...
DAPRIMA:
Herita. She’s Cammeo’s twin sister.
CAMMEO:
Oh dear, did she threaten you?
MEZ:
No - why?
DAPRIMA:
Cammeo, I don’t believe he’s in any danger.
CAMMEO:
But … but you said you couldn’t read her.
DAPRIMA:
No, but I can read him.
MEZ:
OK, what’s going on?
DAPRIMA:
Cammeo you need to tell him. Why don't you two go
in the study where no one'll bother you.
Then ...
CAMMEO:
Mez, what do you know about my life before this one?
MEZ:
You grew up in London, then you moved to Ohio, right?
CAMMEO:
Yes, the Webster family moved us here in 1857.
MEZ:
I keep forgetting that your life was interrupted so long ago.
… Didn’t your guardian die? Then you … faded away.
CAMMEO:
Yes, my sweet Mirabel, but there’s a bit more to it. Herita and I
were close. I suppose most twins are, but we shared a rare gift.
MEZ:
I’m guessing she wasn’t a musical protogee like you?
CAMMEO:
Not at all. We were born with supernatural abilities. At that time
London was a haven for vampires, such an evil lot - all of them. Herita and I could spot one in an instant. Tahen we’d eliminate them. We were guided by the Committee, who trained us.
MEZ:
You mean you're a vampire slayer?
But how? Cammeo, you’re afraid of vampires.
CAMMEO:
Not at all. I’d just hate to have to go back to ridding
us of them, it’s such a messy task.
CAMMEO:
… But I found out that vampired elves are quite different from vampired
humans. Elves have a more subtle transformation and are not dangerous.
MEZ:
You mean you're really a vampire slayer?
CAMMEO:
- That doesn’t mean they’re not capable of evil. They’re just not as
easily swayed to their darker natures, like humans who’ve been turned.
MEZ:
Wow, a vampire slayer.
CAMMEO:
Will you please stop saying that? First off, we're Seekers, not slayers.
Slayer sounds so much more brutal, don’t you think?
MEZ:
Right. I just can't picture you doing the whole Buffy thing.
CAMMEO:
Buffy who?
MEZ:
'Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ - oh forget it, I’ll just shut up now.
CAMMEO:
I think that may be best.
MEZ:
OK, I’m listening.
CAMMEO:
Right. We lived a very simple life then. By day, Herita and I were Mirabel’s constant companions. At night, we went seeking. All was well until Herita met Edward. She told him she was a Seeker, which was not allowed. We were to keep our work secret, to protect everyone involved.
CAMMEO:
… I suppose he became curious cause he followed us. A vampire
caught and turned him. Then Edward came for Herita. She could have easily eliminated him but instead she allowed him to turn her.
Then she came for me.
- only it wasn’t Herita, my sister,
it was Herita the vampire.
She was so changed - so dark, so evil.
CAMMEO:
… She wanted me to join her. I refused. Surprisingly, she left. The next day
I went straight to the Committee. I told them I would not eliminate
my own sister. They arranged for the Websters and me,
to journey to the new world.
MEZ:
Ohio?
CAMMEO:
Yes. The night we left, I saw Herita on the dock. I had hoped
she’d remain in London, but her obsession was too strong.
CAMMEO:
… Some time later my Mirabel fell ill. I was frantic with worry. Then I saw him, Herita’s Edward …
CAMMEO:
… He had snuck into Mirabel's room and was feeding off her.
That bastard was killing my little girl! I went mad for
an instant. All I remember is tossing him into the
flames of the fireplace.
CAMMEO:
… That’s the one way to kill a vampire. They must be burnt. Burnt till there’s nothing left. The other is to decapitate them.
CAMMEO:
…Then I waited for Herita. I knew she'd sensed his demise, and then were she was.
“You killed my boy! she screamed.
CAMMEO:
… She didn’t even sound like Herita any more.
“Why did you come here? Why couldn’t you just stay
in London?” I demanded.
“You’re my twin. I had to come. Our bond is strong, too strong.
You'll never be free of me.” she answered.
CAMMEO:
…Then we struggled. It was almost sunrise. I tried to drag her towards
the terrace. The sun was rising and she had little time. She ran.
In her hurry she was careless and led me straight to her crypt.
CAMMEO:
…I was prepared. I slipped off the lid of the
sarcophagus and poured kerosene inside.
MEZ:
You don't have to tell me anymore ...
CAMMEO:
Then I set it on fire.
CAMMEO:
... Her screams were deafening! Sometimes, I can still
hear them. And then there was nothing, nothing but the
sounds of the flames dying down.
CAMMEO:
…When I arrived home, my darling Mirabel was dead … sniff
… poor little dear, didn't even live to see her 8th birthday.
CAMMEO:
… I couldn’t go on after that, so the Committee granted me rest.
They preserved my form, and I slept until your sister’s mind
reached out and touched mine.
MEZ:
Daprima knew about all this?
CAMMEO:
Some. I didn’t mean to be so secretive. I just prefer not
to dwell on it. Are you upset with me?
MEZ:
I think it's kind of cool that you're this bad ass from another time.
CAMMEO:
Oh Mez, you’re so funny … There is one thing that worries me. I ended her Edward. What if she wants revenge and tries to hurt you?
MEZ:
What could she do to me? She’s only a girl - I didn’t mean it like that.
Look, I get that she was evil but she’s human now. And who knows,
maybe once she adjusts, she’ll be like your old sister again.
CAMMEO:
You think so? Yes, maybe ... you could be right… Except, then
why would she insist upon being invited in
- like vampires of my time?
