267 - I Think I Need A Minute
2020
Lu Daprima Quinn Cammeo
Thursday in the dining room …
LU:
… When do you plan to make the wish, Daprima?
DAPRIMA:
This evening, right after sunset.
QUINN:
Tonight? Ya goin’ to wake up the sleeping vampire
on this very night?
LU:
You’ll be perfectly safe, Quinn. I’ve already told you, she’s friendly.
QUINN:
Aye, but what if she’s hungry or … the thing that made her
attack that prince ya told me about, what if it’s still in her?
LU:
She may be hungry but we have supplies
for that. As for the potion which caused the incident,
it wore off long before she was put under the sleep spell.
CAMMEO:
Suppose we wait till morning to wake her, and do it just
before sunrise? Then, if she isn’t quite herself, I’d only need
to subdue her till the sun rises, and puts her back to sleep.
DAPRIMA:
OK, then that’s the plan. I’ll tell Racolo and work on the wish.
Cammeo, will you introduce Quinn to Io for me?
CAMMEO:
Of course.
DAPRIMA:
Thanks. Then, I’ll see you first thing tomorrow.
LU:
I’ll walk out with you. I need to call Harmonia.
CAMMEO:
I suppose this all seems quite odd to you?
QUINN:
You mean me sitting here talking to a real life vampire slayer?
CAMMEO:
The actual term is Seeker, and for the most part, I’m retired.
QUINN:
Aye, right! But ya really hunted vampires right, like Buffy?
CAMMEO:
Buffy? You mean that television show? Yes, Mez had me
watch all the episodes last year …
QUINN:
Mez?
CAMMEO:
My boyfriend, and he’s also Daprima’s brother.
QUINN:
Oh. What’s his deal?
CAMMEO:
I beg your pardon?
QUINN:
It’s like this - I room with Aless - him and his brother are wizards.
Them others are about to wake up a vampire using a genie owned by a clairvoyant. And you, you’re a vampire slay… Seeker. So what’s up with Mez?
CAMMEO:
Oh, I see what you mean. Actually, he’s quite normal.
QUINN:
Just a regular bloke eh, nothing special?
CAMMEO:
I wouldn’t say that.
QUINN:
No?
CAMMEO:
Certainly not. Mez is … well, he’s funny and smart and … well, gorgeous
and … Oh he does have a specialty now that I think on it, he’s very good
at soccer or so I’ve been told. I’m sure you and he will get on quite well.
QUINN:
No magic?
CAMMEO:
Oh no. He’d prefer it if there was no magic at all.
It makes him quite uncomfortable.
QUINN:
Aye.
CAMMEO:
I suppose being here is a bit overwhelming. I know how
you must feel. You see, when I first arrived everything
was …. so modern. It scared me.
QUINN:
A lass who hunts down vampires, scared of here?
CAMMEO:
That was different. I was born a Seeker. It was my duty to terminate
vampires. Well, only the ones who began as humans, elves don’t
become evil once turned. I suppose the Committee has
since amended that part.
QUINN:
The Committee?
CAMMEO:
Oh dear, Lu hasn’t told you?
QUINN:
I donnae, do I even want to know?
CAMMEO:
The Committee train and advise Seekers. Your sister’s part of it.
She’s my guardian, like that English chap on Buffy.
QUINN:
Right. I can see that I’m gonna need a long think on this
when you’re done telling me whatever else there is to tell me.
CAMMEO:
Sorry. Shall I go on and would you rather we stop here?
QUINN:
Naw, I can take it, I hope.
CAMMEO:
All right then, way back when I was an active Seeker, I never
knew elves existed, much less vampire elves.
QUINN:
Ya act as if it was a very long time ago.
CAMMEO:
Oh but it was … we, Herita and I, she’s my twin,
we went on our first hunt back in 1854.
QUINN:
Didja just say eighteen-fifty-four?
CAMMEO:
I did. It’s quite a long story but I’ll keep it short. Herita and
I were Seekers for about ten years. Then, she became
a vampire and I had no choice but to … to …
CAMMEO:
… end her. It all became a bit much for me so the Committee released
me from my body and I … sort of escaped for a century and a half.
CAMMEO:
… Then, Daprima found me, using her special gifts. I was restored to
my body, which had been magically preserved.
CAMMEO:
… And by then - it really was a whole new world.
QUINN:
Aye, right.
CAMMEO:
Oh don’t worry Quinn, as you can see - I’ve adapted to it all
and so shall you. Now, let’s go find Io.
QUINN:
I think I may need a minute, or two.
CAMMEO:
Yes, that may be best. I’ll make us a fresh pot of tea.
