RACOLO:
…I got a message on my cell about an emergency.
Something happen to my kid?
ZYFAN:
Rest easy my friend, Lithium is fine. This is about your brother.
RACOLO:
Aless - is he sick?
ZYFAN:
No. He accidentally hit Daprima with a lightning bolt.
RACOLO:
He - did what? Is she OK? Is he OK?
ZYFAN:
She will be fine. Right now, she is resting. It seems, like you, Aless
has inherited the gift of magic from your grandmother. Racolo,
he does not understand and he is frightened.
RACOLO:
Oh wow. Where is he?
ZYFAN:
In his room.
RACOLO:
Thanks.
Meanwhile ...
ALESS:
Is Daprima r-really alright?
ESMODONTI:
Yes cherie, I told ya she’ll be fine. Now ya hafta
get some rest. You look so beat.
ALESS:
But when I c-close my eyes I see … Oh Es what d-did I do?
ESMODONTI:
It’s gonna be alright sweetie.
ALESS:
He’s g-gonna send me away. I’ve been t-trying so hard
n-not to be any t-trouble to him …
ESMODONTI:
Who hon? No one’s sending ya anywhere.
What could make ya even think such a thing?
ESMODONTI:
... It's about time. Look sweetie, Roc's here.
ESMODONTI:
... And he's gonna make everything all better.
You'll see. I’ll just grab my little elf kin and split.
ESMODONTI:
… Say bye bye to daddy sweetie.
Roc, you be nice to him or I’ll kick your ass, get me?
RACOLO:
Right.
RACOLO:
Hey. You OK?
ALESS:
I d-didn’t m-mean to do it. She just … I felt like she was
c-crawling inside m-my head.
RACOLO:
I know. Daprima’s empathic, she doesn’t do it on purpose.
I hate it when she tries to get in my head. There’s a way to block her. I‘ll teach you. I just didn't know you could feel her too.
ALESS:
Do you r-r-really think I c-could block her?
RACOLO:
Absolutely.
ALESS:
You’re n-not g-g-going to send me away, are you?
RACOLO:
What the hell are you talking about? Why would I send you away?
ALESS:
The last t-time this happened …
RACOLO:
This happened before? Does dad know?
ALESS:
No. I c-couldn’t tell him. He’d g-get really m-mad at me.
You know how he feels about m-magic
RACOLO:
Uh-huh. Did I ever tell you how I found out I could do magic?
ALESS:
No.
RACOLO:
Dad and me were fighting, as usual, and I was banished to my room. I was so pissed off. After I threw a few things around I saw my notebook. So, to calm down, I began writing random stuff. I remember scribbling something about rain. Then I read it
out loud - and it started pouring in my room.
ALESS:
No! You m-mean inside the house? What d-did you do?
RACOLO:
I freaked out. Then Dad stormed in - no pun intended. You should have seen the look on his face! There we were, getting soaked from
this downpour, starring at each other. Then he did something completely unexpected. He yells - ‘Mother, oh mother!’
ALESS:
Grandmother?
RACOLO:
Uh-huh, and there she was, standing in front of us. She ... assessed the situation, grabbed my notebook, wrote something in it and told me to read it out loud. When I did - the rain stopped and all the water vanished, like it was never there.
ALESS:
W-what happened next?
RACOLO:
Everything. No one told me magic was real and that Gram
was this sorceress. They had this big shouting match. Next thing
I know - I’m moving to New York to live with her.
ALESS:
Daddy n-n-never t-told me why he l-let you l-l-leave. I thought
it was b-because you were always so m-much ...
RACOLO:
… Trouble. Yeah, that was part of it. Aless, it never occurred to me that you inherited the gift too. We’re gonna hafta make some changes. A lightning bolt – that’s pretty powerful stuff. You’re gonna hafta learn some self control.
ALESS:
D-does that m-m-mean I go to Magick School, with you?
RACOLO:
Uh-huh. You said this happened before?
ALESS:
Wh-when I was in b-boarding school I sort of … zapped someone.
I d-didn’t mean to. He scared me, and he w-wouldn’t l-let me leave.
RACOLO:
Uh-huh, keep going.
ALESS:
I g-guess the library was cl-closing, and I was the only one left.
He c-corned me in English l-literature and … he t-t-touched my hair.
RACOLO:
Son of a … Is that all he did?
ALESS:
I t-tried to get away but he g-grabbed me and ... I zapped him.
I d-don’t know how. Then I r-r-ran out of there as fast as I
c-could. Wh-when I got back to school, the headmaster was
w-w-waiting for me. He knew. I d-don’t know how, b-but he did.
ALESS:
... He said the clerk was OK b-but that this incident would be best
l-left unsaid. He c-called Daddy and t-told him I needed to come home.
RACOLO:
Did he mention why?
ALESS:
N-no. D-daddy thought I was homesick. I d-didn't want anyone to know … When Daprima b-began c-crawling in my head ...I c-couldn't let her see. You won't tell d-d-daddy, will you?
RACOLO:
No, but I’m gonna want to talk to that headmaster and find that creep.
I know a portal I can use … Magic uses a lot of energy. You’re tired.
ALESS:
A l-little.
RACOLO:
Go to sleep. Don’t worry about anything.
